Do You Still Need a Free Antivirus in 2026?
Short answer: for most people, no third-party antivirus is needed. Microsoft Defender, already built into Windows 10 and 11, scores at or near the top of independent lab tests and costs nothing. What we do recommend adding is Malwarebytes as an on-demand second opinion.
The honest setup
- Keep Microsoft Defender on. It is already there, already updated through Windows Update, and it does not nag or upsell you.

They detect malware fine, but the free versions exist to upsell you: persistent notifications, scare-tactic “issues found” screens, and bundled browser extensions. Avast was also fined for selling user browsing data through its Jumpshot subsidiary in 2020. The value trade is no longer worth it when the built-in option is this good.
When paid antivirus does make sense
- You manage PCs for relatives who click everything
- A business machine with compliance requirements
- You want extras like a firewall manager, VPN or identity monitoring in one bill
